Irene Routté, JV Program Coordinator
Born and raised in eastern Pennsylvania, Irene has been telling family and friends since she was little that Portland, Oregon felt like her real home. She is thrilled that she can finally say that it is! After her undergraduate studies, Irene completed two years of service at a community based social services organization in Seattle teaching social justice history and public art classes to at risk youth. She has since worked as a counselor, case manager and advocate with unaccompanied immigrant and refugee youth across the country as they went through the process of reunification and resettlement. These experiences led her to obtain her master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School, focusing on how religious communities could better meet the needs of those experiencing sexual and migration related trauma. In addition to being passionate about immigrant rights and racial and social justice, Irene is constantly questioning and working on the tangible ways we create safe and sustaining spaces, places and communities, especially for newcomers and marginalized groups. She looks forward to working with JVs as they engage with and grow in the communities they enter during their service year.
