Alex Salonga, Recruiter (he/him)
I grew up in Orange County, California, near Disneyland but far from the beach towns. I went to one of the many Loyolas, Loyola Marymount University in LA. I majored in Film and Television Production, but over my four years engaging with Jesuit Education, Catholic Social Teaching, and volunteering, my life goals shifted. I went from dreaming of directing a Marvel film to utilizing storytelling to uplift and amplify the voices of marginalized peoples.
I’m grateful that I managed to make my worlds meet with JVC Northwest, as I did my service year at KYUK Public Media in Bethel, Alaska. Coming from SoCal to the tundra was a bit of culture shock in more ways than one, but I’m forever grateful for the experience and for all I learned from my Alaska Native friends.
Currently, I am so grateful to step into the role of West Coast Recruiter for JVC Northwest and JVC, sharing my story with folks who may be interested in where a year can take them.
Mostly though, I enjoy skating, reading anti-war novels, playing pick-up basketball (I miss Bethel’s great hoops scene), and trying to find Mexican and Filipino food that tastes like my family’s in my new home base of Seattle.
