Ilana Weber, JV Program Coordinator
I grew up in a small town south of Madison, Wisconsin, then graduated (as a first-generation college student!) from a small school outside Chicago with a Bachelor’s in Anthropology. I originally began as a Voice major in the Conservatory of Music, but the long practice hours and perfectionistic culture drove me to maintain singing as a hobby and instead consider my other passion: understanding people better. When looking for jobs my senior year of college, I wanted a job that would form me into the kind of person I aspire to be. Going beyond the Midwest near mountains and the coast was pretty alluring, too. I joined L’Arche Portland, where I spent two years sharing life in a house where half of my housemates had disabilities. I loved the integration that L’Arche provided- home, work, and intentional community were all in the same house, allowing an embodied solidarity and intimacy that will never leave me. The values of simplicity, mutual relationship with those on the margins, community, and spirituality in L’Arche confirmed for me that prioritizing those values and putting myself in places where I can practice them design my understanding of a life well-lived. I am thankful for the opportunity to accompany the JVC Northwest community as we pursue simplicity, community, spirituality, and justice together.
In my free time, I enjoy riding my bicycle around Portland, trying new recipes, eating the results of other people’s recipes, beginning (and rarely finishing) craft projects, thrifting, reading, weekend excursions, training in anti-oppression and intercultural work, getting to know my church family, and spending quality time with people that I love.
