Jo Garro, Project Management Intern (she/they)

Hey! My name is Josephine Garro, but you can call me Jo. I am originally from Omaha NE, and yes, I do love corn, especially popcorn. I went to school at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO where I got my Bachelor’s Degree in psychology and criminal justice. On campus, I was involved in organization leadership within Active Minds, a mental health advocacy group, and Gamma Phi Beta-Eta Iota, my sorority.

Following graduation, I did a year of service (‘24-25) with JVC Northwest in Seattle, WA at Transitional Resources (TR), and I am so grateful for my decision to do so. TR is a mental health facility in West Seattle that helps people with severe mental illness get access to medical and mental health care as well as providing temporary and permanent housing for them. My role there was Rehabilitation Support Specialist, in other words, I got to plan and execute groups as well as assist clients with medical appointments and other case management needs. After my position, I have a newfound respect for social workers and for people with severe mental illness. I was able to practice breaking down the mental health stigma in real time, which is something I have been passionate about since college. My year of service was a transformative year for me and my community – shoutout Mercy House <3! I am so happy to follow up my year of service with another great opportunity with JVC Northwest as the Vision & Call Project Management Intern. I cannot wait to grow and change as a person and as a leader.

Also, I am currently enrolled in a Master of Counseling program at La Sierra University, in Riverside CA, as I pursue a career of being therapist in a prison setting.

If I am not at work or school, I enjoy spending time with my cat, Ruth, and my beautiful girlfriend, Cate. I LOVE doing yoga, listening to music, and reading or watching documentaries on anything true crime related.

Want to contact Jo? Email her here.
This internship is supported by the Vision & Call program of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust.
