Meghan Burke, Communications Intern (she/her)
After graduating from Saint Louis University with a degree in International Studies and Anthropology, I rolled the dice and moved to Tacoma, WA to serve as a JV at the Nativity House Shelter. Prior to my JV year, I had never been to the West Coast. I quickly fell in love with the stunning landscapes of Northwest Washington and the quiet resilience of Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood, where I lived and served. My JV year left an indelible mark on my heart, and I am humbled to have had the experiences I did. I am so excited to continue engaging with the values and community of JVCNW in a new role, working as the Communications Intern this year.
I was raised on the northwest side of Chicago in an Irish Catholic family that believed in lifelong learning, service towards others, and the healing power of a cup of tea. My family is full of storytellers, as most Irish families are. I learned from a young age that stories told with care can be a bridge to connection, a way to bring levity when life feels heavy. My JV story is just one thread in the tapestry that weaves together past, present and future volunteers. It certainly feels like a gift to be a small part of a larger movement towards creating a more equitable world.
I am a firm believer that life itself is our greatest teacher, and I enjoy mine by spending time in nature, creating & enjoying art of all kinds, and traveling. I love seeing live music, reading (especially memoirs and poetry), and coaxing my friends and family into watching my favorite movies with me.
