Amarylis Fernandez, AmeriCorps Grants Manager (she/her)
I was born to a Peruvian father and a South Carolinian mother, fusing two worlds together for the rest of my life; the condor and the eagle, Appalachia and the Andes. This early open relationship to spirit has guided me, steadfast to this day, through many of life’s adventures, dramas and traumas.
When my degree in the performing arts failed to provide steady employment, I accidentally stumbled upon my love of non-profit administration. Being able to help operate the organizations that serve communities was such a joy! Decades later, I now have a background in education, grant writing, two years of AmeriCorps VISTA service, and directorship of an AmeriCorps State program, all of which focused on providing opportunities to underserved populations and youth—and all of which lead me here to JVC Northwest, an incredible blend of service and spirit!
Following in the footsteps of teaching and leading programs, I’m also a certified yoga instructor (primarily with classes for pregnant people) and an Ayurvedic health counselor. I believe there must be unison in mind, body and spirit to skillfully navigate these planetary times and that the biggest steps we can take toward a more whole and healed world is to uncover the healing needed within our own heart.
When I’m not architecting programs or teaching, you’ll find this early bird climbing at the gym (and sometimes outside), meditating as the sun rises, snuggling with my daughter, or daydreaming of post-pandemic international travel. . .
